Jeff Foster, O.D.

Dr. Jeff Foster joined the practice of Drs. Ford and Henry in Newport after graduating from Southern College of Optometry in the class of 1981. Dr. Nathan Ford began the practice in October, 1950 and Dr. William B. Henry joined Dr. Ford following his graduation as Valedictorian in 1961. Dr. Foster attended Newport Grammar School and graduated from Cocke County High School in 1974 then attended East Tennessee State University before attending S.C.O. The practice is now Drs. Foster and Steele having seen a continuum of service to eye health and vision care patients for these many years. While at Southern College of Optometry Dr. Foster served externships at the Gallup Indian Hospital in Gallup, NM and additionally with two private practioners in Memphis and Lenoir City, TN. In optometry school Dr. Foster served a term as President of the Tennessee Club and was active in the Omega Delta professional fraternity serving a term as treasurer and receiving the Senior Omega Delta Award. In practice Dr. Foster is a member of the Smoky Mountain Optometric Physicians, Tennessee Association of Optometric Physicians, Tennessee Academy of Optometry, Southern Council of Optometry, and the American Optometric Association. Dr. Foster has served as President of the East TN Optometric Society. In 1985, Dr. Foster was awarded the “Young O.D. of the Year” award and in 1996 was awarded the “O.D. of the Year” by the Tennessee Optometric Association. Dr. Foster is active in all these professional associations having served as President of both the Tennessee Optometric Association and Tennessee Academy of Optometry. Dr. Foster has served as legislative chair of the Tennessee Optometric Association and is a past TOPAC chairman. Dr. Foster has served a term as trustee to the Southern Council of Optometry. He is serving a second term on the Tennessee Board of Examiners in Optometry and currently serves as Chairman and represented the board on the state’s Controlled Substances Database Committee. Dr. Foster was recently certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry (ABO).  Dr. Foster serves on the consultative/courtesy staff of Tennova/Newport Medical Center.  Dr. Foster currently serves on the session of Fellowship Presbyterian Church, P.C.A. Dr. Foster is a Life Member of the National Rifle Association. He has served terms on several local boards as members among those being the Cocke County Election Commission, Cocke County Library Board, Newport-Cocke County Economic Development Commission, Douglas Adult Cooperative, and the East Tennessee Eye Bank. Dr. Foster has been a past president of the Lions Club, Boy’s Club, and Cocke County Democratic Party. Dr. Foster’s hobbies include being a frenzied follower of the East Tennessee State University Buccaneers basketball program along with international and domestic hunting, shooting sporting clays and trap, and being actively involved in organized optometry’s efforts to serve our patients.
 
Kurt Steele, O.D. Kurt Steele, O.D.

Dr. Steele went to Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN where he graduated in 1995. He served as a chairman for the optometry student's national meeting held in 1994 in Memphis. Dr. Steele was also treasurer of the Contact Lens Society and was in Tennessee Student Optometric Association. Also since being in practice Dr. Steele has been awarded the Young Optometrist of the Year award and has also served as President of the Tennessee Optometric Association. Dr. Steele currently serves as President of the Smoky Mountain Optometric Association and serves on the CE committee of the Southeastern Council of Optometrists board which has the second largest international meeting every February in Atlanta, GA. The practice is very proud that Dr. Steele was awarded the Tennessee Optometric Association's "O.D. of the Year" Award at its 2008 annual Congress. Since being in Newport, Dr. Steele has served on the board of the Kiwanis Club of Newport and was also President in 1999-2000. He was honored to be Kiwanian of the Year for 1998 and 1999. Dr. Steele has also served as President of the United Way. Drs. Foster and Steele are both on Consult staff at the Baptist Hospital of Cocke County. Dr. Steele and his beautiful wife Sacha live in Newport and absolutely love it here. Sacha teaches science lab at Edgemont and has been at that school for thirteen years. In their spare time Dr. Steele likes to golf while Mrs. Steele loves to shop, play guitar, and sing. Both also enjoy watching all University of Tennessee athletics (both Vols and Lady Vols).
 
Dr. Stone

Joy Stone, O.D.

Dr. Joy Stone joined the practice in August of 2010.  A native of Oneida, Tennessee, Dr. Joy Stone graduated Magna Cum Laude from Southern College of Optometry in April 2010.  While at SCO, Dr. Stone served externships at the Center of Vision Development with Dr. Jason Clopton in Cookeville, Tennessee, and at Campbell, Cunningham, and Taylor with Dr. Allyn Hildebrand and Dr. Leslie Cunningham in Knoxville, Tennessee.   Dr. Stone received her undergraduate degree in Instrumental Music Education at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she was a member of the Pride of the Southland Marching Band, Men's and Women's Basketball Pep Bands, Wind Ensemble, Horn Ensemble, and Orchestra.  Dr. Stone was commissioned in November 2012 to the rank of Captain serving in the Tennessee Air National Guard 134th Medical Group where she serves as Optometrist.  Prior to this, Dr. Stone had served 14 years of service in the Air National Guard with the Air National Guard Band of the Smoky Mountains, where she served as hornist and vocalist in addition to numerous administrative roles.

Nathan Ford, O.D. (L) & William "Bill" Henry, O.D. (R)

Dr. Nathan Ford is the founding member of this practice back in October, 1950. Dr. William B. Henry joined Dr. Ford following his graduation as Valedictorian in 1961. Together these two fine doctors took care of the eyecare needs of Newport. Even though both have retired from patient care, they still remain vital pillars in our office and prominent members of the community. Do not be surprised if you spot either Dr. Ford or Dr. Henry in the office on your next visit.
